During the filming of the western “Rust”, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin (63) lost a bullet from the prop gun and hit camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (42). In the hospital only her death could be determined. The director Joel Souza (48) was also hit, his life is in danger. How dangerous prop pistols can be has been known since the death of Bruce Lee’s son Brandon Lee(1965-1993). He died on the set of “The Crow” from a set gun. Lee’s family have now also commented on the fatal accident on the set of “Rust”. “Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. Nobody should ever die again by a gun on a film set,” said a Twitter statement. Jon-Erik Hexum held a dummy to his head for fun on the set of “Cover Up” in 1984 – and died at the age of 26.
Better known as The Crocodile Hunter, documentary filmmaker Steve Irwin died at the age of 44 in 2006 on the set in Australia while trying to film a stingray. It is well known that stunt doubles live particularly risky lives: In 2017, Joi Harris died on the set of “Deadpool 2”. John Bernecker did not survive the shooting of “The Walking Dead” in the same year.
Other Hollywood stars were luckier : Sylvestor Stallone, for example. The star himself directed “Rocky IV” and because he wanted the fight scenes to be depicted as authentically as possible, he asked his opponent Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) to strike hard. He hadn’t expected its clout. Stallone’s pericardium swelled, he could be helped.
Face-to-face scenes were not uncommon for kung fu star Jackie Chan , who is known for doing all of the stunts himself. It almost went wrong on the set of Armor of God. In one scene he was supposed to swing himself off a branch, when it broke, the action star fell five meters and hit his head on a stone. Emergency surgery saved his life. And: The almost fatal stunt could even be seen in the end credits of the flick.
It is still one of the most successful films of all time: “Titanic” with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Less known is that Kate Winselt nearly drowned. In an underwater scene, her dress got caught on a hook. The whole shoot was later described by the actress as a “nightmare”. She developed pneumonia and many bruises.
And one of today’s cleverest and smartest rescuers in the world almost suffocated while filming. 007 actor Daniel Craig almost escaped death on the set of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Craig’s figure is cut off in front of the camera with a plastic bag, a piece of metal has been pressed into his hand and the Briton soon dropped the piece. It was stopped and Craig survived.
