assistant professor of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, was picked up from her Baily Road residence on Wednesday morning

RAB will take legal action, says official

The Rapid Action Battalion has detained a female college teacher for questioning as she spread a deceptive video on Facebook to protest against the communal attacks.

Ruma Sarker, assistant professor of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, was picked up from her Baily Road residence on Wednesday morning.

RAB Legal and Media Wing Assistant Director ASP ANM Imran Khan confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Ruma had uploaded a video of the murder of one Shahinuddin in Dhaka’s Pallabi, claiming it to be the footage of the murder of Jatan Kumar Saha, who died in a mob attack in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila on October 15, Imran Khan said.

RAB would take legal action against Ruma according to the law, he added.

Referring to the murder of Shahinuddin that took place on May 16 in Pallabi where he was brutally hacked to death, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at an event on Tuesday said by spreading video footage of that incident, a vested group was trying to spread propaganda.“The law enforcement agencies will soon find out those involved in such activities and take legal action against them,” said the minister.

Communal tension has gripped Bangladesh over the past few days following the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja venue on October 13 which triggered violence in two dozen districts.

Many have been arrested over the attacks and the spreading of communal hatred on social media during the largest festival of Hindus. Security was beefed up at places of worship and Border Guard Bangladesh troopers were dispatched to more than two dozen districts. The 10-day festival came to a close on Friday with the immersion of Durga idols.

Five people died as police opened fire during attacks on Puja venues in Chandpur’s Hajiganj on October 13, and in Noakhali’s Choumuhani, attacks on Hindu temples left two dead, including Jatan, on October 15.

The government and law enforcement agencies have described the incidents as well as the spreading of disinformation as attempts to destabilize the country.
